Within two years of discovering patchwork, Michelle was working for an Australian distributor of American patchwork cottons, as a sample maker. This allowed her to work from home, around the responsibilities of her two small children. It also meant that she was exposed to many styles of fabrics, and stepped up to the challenge of designing quilts in all genres. It was during this time that her work was noticed by magazine editors. She was among the contributors included in the first edition of Australian Patchwork and Quilting magazine. Since that date she has been published consistently in a wide variety of Australian magazines and written three books. Michelle writes a permanent column in Quilters Companion, Road Test, where she puts different products through their paces. Michelle has presented 9 DVD’s for Quilters Companion, on a variety of techniques and subjects. Michelle spreads her patchwork and quilting knowledge by teaching. Her quilts have received numerous awards at the NSW Quilter’s Guild Quilt Shows. Since 2008 Michelle has escorted Australian quilters overseas on patchwork tours to America, Canada, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore and Europe for Travelrite International and Quilters Companion. In 2009 Michelle designed her first fabric range. Called Suzani, it was a funky range of raspberries, aquas, mochas and zesty limes. The designs were hand drawn by Michelle and printed to her specific colours. Michelle followed up in 2010 with Michelle’s Backyard range, in 2017 with Punctuated and 2018 with her fourth range, Cidade. Michelle is skilled in all techniques of quilt making, but loves piecing, whether by hand or machine techniques. She is currently designing template sets to enable more intricate designs to be easily, and accurately, cut and pieced.
VIEW ITINERARYDAY 1 Saturday 18 March, 2023 Victor Harbor
Tour members will depart from Adelaide airport at 12.30pm. We will
have time for a stop in the quaint town of Hahndorf – “Australia’s Oldest
German Town”, settled in 1839 by Lutherans fleeing religious persecution
in Prussia. Hahndorf was named after the ship’s captain Hahn, whilst
dorf is German for village. We continue to our accommodation at Victor
Harbor for a 2 night stay. This evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner.
DAY 2 Sunday 19 March, 2023 Victor Harbor
This morning we will visit Penny Lane Patchwork shop. They stock a large
range of kits and fabrics including some fabulous children’s fabrics. Early
afternoon we catch the Cockle Train to Goolwa, a gorgeous riverside
town at the mouth of the Murray. In the early days of settlement locals
would take the horse drawn train to Goolwa to collect cockles for bait.
On our return to Victor Harbor we will set up our project under Michelle
Marvig’s instruction.
DAY 3 Monday 20 March, 2023 Embarkation
Today we travel to Mannum arriving at lunch time. We have free time
before boarding the PS Murray Princess mid-afternoon and sailing
upriver while we enjoy a Welcome Aboard dinner. As we cruise under

nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank. Watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed
wombats, tortoises, egrets and many other species.

the township of Blanchetown for our overnight anchorage. As the last
rays of the sun fade, we visit Burk Salter Boutique Winery and enjoy wine
tasting at the cellar door, which is fitted out with beautiful red gum bars.
After dinner, join us for all the fun and excitement, and participate in our
“Murray River Cup” – the local version of the Melbourne Cup.
DAY 5 Wednesday 22 March, 2023 Swan Reach/Sunnydale
After breakfast cruise to picturesque Swan Reach. The town was first
settled in the 1850s and was originally the largest of five sheep and
cattle stations in the area and is now home to native flower and fruit
growers. The original Swan Reach homestead is now the Swan Reach
Hotel where you can enjoy an ale or cappuccino overlooking the Murray
River. Join a walking tour and visit the Swan Reach Museum. After lunch
as we cruise downriver we can take in the tranquillity as the landscape
slides by or work on your project. When we arrive at Sunnydale, it’s all
ashore for the Woolshed Show where we take in some typical Australian
woolshed history. Later we visit the Native Wildlife Shelter where some
of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. And
then of course, there is the great Aussie Barbecue – cooked and served
in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River. After dinner,
there are two optional onshore tours to choose from (additional cost).
A Nocturnal Tour in a comfortable purpose-built cart where you may
see kangaroos, wombats, foxes, bats and owls and the Dark Sky Night

scoured by the river over millions of years. Tour members will have time
to work on their projects. We reach Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve,
one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, for a step back in
time – tens of thousands of years – for a guided boardwalk tour to view
ancient rock carvings and to learn about aboriginal history in the area.
We return to the vessel to cruise downriver to Younghusband.

Kingscote, the largest town on the island. This is South Australia’s oldest
European settlement. We will have time to explore that main street and

those wishing to dine with the group for dinner.

about their habitats. On our drive around the island we will be able to
