John’s knowledge and enthusiasm will inspire you to produce better paintings in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
DAY 1: Monday 26 April, 2021
Flinders Ranges
Workshop members will depart Adelaide airport
at 10.00am. (Please allow adequate time to collect
your luggage prior to departure). We travel to
Flinders Ranges National Park, where we will be
staying at the Wilpena Pound Resort. The Flinders
Ranges offer some of the most spectacular and
rugged scenery in South Australia. Wilpena Pound
is an extraordinary natural basin covering about 80
square kilometres. Heysen is remembered for his
beautiful watercolours depicting the wonderful
colours of the bare hills of the Wilpena’s. On
arrival the group will get together for an included
welcome drinks and dinner.
DAY 2: Tuesday 27 April, 2021
Flinders Ranges
John will find a great painting location close to the
hotel and show you how to interpret the unique
beauty of this landscape with its indigenous
history, ancient geological formations, rich colours
and textures, open spaces, clear air and abundant
wildlife. During your stay you will have the
opportunity of going on an optional sightseeing
flight over Wilpena Pound. We will enjoy an included
dinner each night of stay in the Flinders Ranges.
DAY 3: Wednesday 28 April, 2021
Flinders Ranges

Tree, subject of the famous photograph entitled
The Spirit of Endurance taken by Dick Smiths’
grandfather Harold Cazneaux in 1937.
DAY 4: Thursday 29 April, 2021
Flinders Ranges
Today we will travel to Brachina Gorge for a day of
painting. This spectacular gorge was once used as
a pass through which bullock teams pulled their
loads and is now a favourite picnic and camping
area and a picturesque painting spot.
DAY 5: Friday 30 April, 2021
Flinders Ranges
Our last day of painting in the Flinders Ranges
National Park. John will paint a demonstration
and then spend time moving amongst the
group members offering individual assistance.
There will be time to join John for a walk through
Sacred Canyon, where you will see aboriginal rock
paintings and carvings.
DAY 6: Saturday 1 May, 2021
Clare Valley
Today we will travel to Burra, one of the most
beautifully preserved towns in South Australia.
Burra is bursting at the seams with historic sites
from the copper mining days in the 1850’s. John
will paint a demonstration and then show you how
to capture the tiny Cornish cottages and numerous
other reminders of the mining days. This evening
we will enjoy an included dinner.
DAY 7: Sunday 2 May, 2021
Clare Valley
This morning we board our coach to paint some
of the lovely stone villages in the Clare Valley. We

mansion in Mintaro as well as the historic township
of Auburn. John will hold a demonstration for
the group and will provide individual help to
workshop members.
DAY 8: Monday 3 May, 2021

members to capture. There will also be the
opportunity to savour the exceptional wine and an
included lunch at a local winery.
DAY 9: Tuesday 4 May, 2021

The Clare Valley is one of Australia’s premium wine
growing regions and home to a working rural
community, who uphold traditions that have been
passed down through the generations. Today will
be a full day of painting in Burra followed by an
informative critique session held in the afternoon
DAY 10: Wednesday 5 May, 2021
Clare Valley
Today we will enjoy a full day of painting in the
township of Burra.
DAY 11: Thursday 6 May, 2021
Hahndorf
This morning we travel to Adelaide Hills’ most
famous town, Hahndorf. Hahndorf is Australia’s
oldest surviving German settlement and home to
Hans Heysen for many years. There’s still a strong
German flavour in Hahndorf, most evident in the
smallgood outlets and German bakeries that line
the bustling main street. In the afternoon we visit
the former home and studio of artist Sir Hans
Heysen. We will take a guided tour of “The Cedars”
this gracious old home, still owned by the Heysen
family. It houses a fine collection of paintings and
drawings displaying Heysen’s remarkable versatility
in subject and medium. Also on the grounds,
we will see Heysen’s working studio, his painting
materials and tools, sketches, notes and more.

“It was so well organized. We got to see all the best places, but without feeling we were being herded around like cattle, like you do on some tours. There was plenty of time to paint, and the instructor told me more about how to improve my painting style in weeks than I have learned all year back home. I really did get individual attention.”
“I particularly enjoyed meeting people with similar interests and having a working reason for being in a location.”
