Amanda Hyatt has been a professional watercolour artist for 35 years. She has had 35 solo exhibitions, with international exhibitions in New York and China where she was described as a ‘Master of Watercolour’ and an ‘International Master of ‘En Plein Air Painting’. For the past twelve years Amanda has taken Travelrite International painting workshop holidays to places such as Antarctica, Europe (France, Italy and Mediterranean Cruises) and the UK. She has won most major Australian Watercolour awards and is a long-term member of both the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society and the Australian Watercolour Institute. Amanda has five teaching DVDs and her book Watercolour Tonal Impressionism is a best seller. Amanda is passionate about the art of watercolour and pushes the boundaries herself in discovering how to make a ‘piece of art’ rather than ‘just a painting’.
Day 1: Sunday 11 September, 2022
Ballarat, Victoria
Tour members will be met at Melbourne airport at
2:00pm and transferred to the workshop hotel in
Ballarat. Gold discovery at Ballarat in 1851 sparked
Victoria’s famous gold rush. Ballarat has some
of Victoria’s best examples of the architecture
that gold built and will be a delight to paint. Late
afternoon there will be a welcome drinks party
followed by an included dinner.
Day 2: Monday 12 September, 2022
Ballarat, Victoria
A full day of painting in Ballarat with Amanda Hyatt.
Amanda will commence with a demonstration and
then assist workshop members individually with
their work. In the afternoon we will have the chance
to visit the Art Gallery of Ballarat, which holds one of
the best regional collections in the country.
Day 3: Tuesday 13 September, 2022
Ballarat, Victoria
Today our excursion from Ballarat takes us to
Daylesford. Originally established during the gold
rush, these days it is a popular spa town. Amanda
will find a great location for today’s painting
session. There will be regular critique sessions
during the workshop.
Day 4: Wednesday 14 September, 2022
Ballarat, Victoria
This morning we will have a painting session with
Amanda Hyatt. Not only did the Goldfields bring
wealth, but along with it came turmoil. In fact,
one of the greatest dramas in Australian history
occurred on the Ballarat goldfields. The Eureka
Stockade remains the only armed civil uprising
against the government in Australia’s history. This
afternoon we will visit the Eureka Centre to learn
about the events that took place. Tonight we enjoy
an included dinner at historic Craig Hotel. Host to
poets, princes and prime ministers such as Lola
Montez and Mark Twain over its 160 year history,
the hotel is a true icon of the Victorian period.
Day 5: Thursday 15 September, 2022
Castlemaine, Victoria
This morning we travel to Creswick, scene of
Australia’s worst gold mining disaster. Creswick
is also the home town of Australia’s former Prime
Minister, John Curtin and the famous artists, the
Lindsays. We continue onto Castlemaine. Within a
year of gold being discovered, the population in
Castlemaine soared to 25,000. There’s something
for everyone in Castlemaine. Lovers of architecture,
fine arts, history and photographers will all find
something to delight them.
Day 6: Friday 16 September, 2022
Castlemaine, Victoria
Today we enjoy a day of painting and an included
morning tea at Buda Historic Home & Garden in
Castlemaine. Buda is an authentic goldfields villa
house and garden named after Budapest by its
Hungarian owner, Ernest Leviny. It was home to
the creative Leviny family for 118 years and houses
their significant intact collection of furniture, art
works and personal belongings. Amanda will
demonstrate how to capture the beauty of Buda
and assist workshop members with their painting.
In the afternoon you may like to visit the excellent
Castlemaine Art Museum.
Day 7: Saturday 17 September, 2022
Castlemaine, Victoria
Today we travel to the township of Maldon,
christened ‘The Best Preserved Town in Australia of
the Gold Mining Era’ by the National Trust. Cottage
gardens, pavements overhung by verandas and old
mining structures are the essence of Maldon. The
place really comes to life on weekends with horse-drawn rides around town and steam train rides
over a section of restored track. We will enjoy a
day of painting in Maldon, Amanda will start with
a demonstration and then assist workshop
members individually.
Day 8: Sunday 18 September, 2022
Castlemaine, Victoria
Today we travel to Maryborough, which boasts
grand gold rush architecture, lush gardens, antiques,
art and a fast growing food and wine scene. We will
enjoy a day of painting with Amanda Hyatt.
Day 9: Monday 19 September, 2022
Beechworth, Victoria
This morning we will travel to Beechworth.
Beechworth is one of Victoria’s best-preserved
gold rush towns. It was one of Australia’s
richest gold fields and the Beechworth Historic
and Cultural Precinct today still abounds in
remarkable architecture with over 30 buildings
listed by the National Trust. This includes hotels,
churches, miner’s cottages and the gaol where
the bushranger Ned Kelly was imprisoned. The
nineteenth century streetscapes will provide
wonderful painting opportunities.
Day 10: Tuesday 20 September, 2022
Beechworth, Victoria
Today we will enjoy a full day of painting in
Beechworth. Amanda will choose some great
subjects for you to paint from the old Pubs,
Churches and many colonial buildings. Beechworth
is also famous for the Beechworth Bakery. Perhaps
try one of their delicious pies or cakes for lunch!
Day 11: Wednesday 21 September, 2022
Beechworth, Victoria
After breakfast we will travel by coach to the
nearby town of Yackandandah for a full day of
painting. Yackandandah has changed little since
the nineteenth century and the town is classified
by the National Trust. The stately buildings built
during the gold rush of the 1800’s as well as shops
which have their original fittings and features have
often been used in Australian period films and
will provide delightful painting opportunities for
workshop members.
Day 12: Thursday 22 September, 2022
Beechworth, Victoria
Our final day of painting in Beechworth. Amanda will
hold her final painting demonstration and then assist
tour members individually. This afternoon there will
be a final critique session and an included dinner.
Day 13: Friday 23 September, 2022

“It was so well organized. We got to see all the best places, but without feeling we were being herded around like cattle, like you do on some tours. There was plenty of time to paint, and the instructor told me more about how to improve my painting style in weeks than I have learned all year back home. I really did get individual attention.”
“I particularly enjoyed meeting people with similar interests and having a working reason for being in a location.”
