Debra paints many subjects but is best known for her impressionistic landscape paintings, particularly her plein air work. “Painting is such a spiritual experience for me. Nothing inspires me more than being out on location, capturing the subtle nuances of color, light and atmosphere that can only be achieved by painting from nature.” Debra is a signature member and President/CEO of the American Impressionist Society, a Master Signature member of Plein Air Artists Colorado, a Signature member of Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and American Plains Artists and an elected member of Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters and the Salmagundi Club, New York. She was a finalist in Southwest Art Magazine’s 2012 Artistic Excellence competition. Debra was a faculty member for the 2014, 2015 and 2018 Plein Air Conventions and 2021 Plein Air Live. Her first instructional video, “Understanding the Effects of Light,”was released with Liliedahl Video in November 2020. She is represented by galleries in Utah, Colorado and her own gallery, Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art, Ralston NE.
DAY 1: Sunday September 25, 2022 Monterey, California
Workshop members will be picked-up early afternoon by a private coach from San Francisco International Airport and transferred south to the delightful old town of Monterey. Monterey’s Spanish colonial past is still visible in the roughly two dozen mid 19th century adobes scattered among the modern structures of downtown. Signs of the city’s more recent heritage as a fishing and cannery town are also prominent and waiting for us to paint. You will have time to relax over a welcome drink and included dinner and Debra will begin the workshop by outlining her plans for the next few days.
DAY 2: Monday September 26, 2022 Monterey, California
After breakfast Debra will begin the painting program with her first painting demonstration. Then it will be your turn to paint as Debra moves among the group, helping each person with their work. Critique sessions will be held at the workshop hotel each evening.
DAY 3: Tuesday September 27, 2022 Monterey, California
Today we enjoy a day of painting in Pacific Grove and along the Monterey coast. Pacific Grove is known for its monarch butterfly grove, its many historic homes, some of which date back to the 19th century, and its long stretch of beautiful rocky coastline featuring several scenic overlooks. Debra will start with a demonstration and then assist workshop members individually.
DAY 4: Wednesday September 28, 2022 Monterey, California
Today we travel to the beautiful town of Carmel-by-the-sea, known for its fairytale cottages and galleries of its village-like center. Debra will find a perfect location for our day of painting and instruction from Debra.
DAY 5: Thursday September 29, 2022 Monterey, California
Our last full day of painting. We will travel back to the beautiful town of Carmel and Debra will demonstrate and then move from person to person offering helpful advice. There will be a critique session before the group comes together for farewell drinks and included dinner to celebrate the success of our time in Monterey.
DAY 6: Friday September 30, 2022 Departure

“It was so well organized. We got to see all the best places, but without feeling we were being herded around like cattle, like you do on some tours. There was plenty of time to paint, and the instructor told me more about how to improve my painting style in weeks than I have learned all year back home. I really did get individual attention.”
“I particularly enjoyed meeting people with similar interests and having a working reason for being in a location.”
