Paul Trenwith

Paul Trenwith is a banjo player and founding member of New Zealand’s hugely influential Hamilton County Bluegrass Band. The HCBB toured Australia, with Slim Dusty, in the 1970s and played on the Grand Ole Opry, in the US, in 1971. Paul is an outstanding singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.

John Howie

John Howie is part or The Howie Brothers, one of Australia’s leading country music / easy listening acts. John has been running successful Music Tours & Music Cruises, along with Travelrite, for 23 years.

Gill Delaney

Gill Delaney is an accordion/ukulele/mouth organ player from Wangaratta. Gill will join the tour as an assistant tour leader and musician, as long as we have a reasonable number of bookings on the tour.

Day 1 Thursday May 2, 2019 Depart Adelaide / Port Augusta
Morning: Depart at 9am from the Hotel Grand Chancellor (please contact Travelrite to book pre-tour accommodation). Visit the South Australian Museum, which has outstanding displays relating to outback South Australia and central Australia. Afternoon: Visit a winery (including short tour & wine tasting) in S.A.’s famous wine region, the Clare Valley. On arrival in Port Augusta, short panoramic tour. Evening: Dinner at our hotel. After dinner we will be entertained by popular South Australian country singer, Graeme Hugo. Overnight: Acacia Ridge Motor Inn, Port Augusta. (wine tasting; D)

DAY 2 Friday May 3, 2019 Flinders Ranges
Today we travel north, to Wilpena Pound, where we will be staying at the Wilpena Pound Resort. Shortly after leaving Port Augusta, enjoy a panoramic coach tour of the historic town of Quorn. We will then stop in the town of Hawker, for morning tea. Then proceed to Wilpena Pound, in the beautiful Flinders Ranges. On arrival at Wilpena Pound Resort, light lunch will be provided. Wilpena Pound is an extraordinary natural basin measuring approximately 14 by 7 kilometres. It’s like a huge natural fortress with only one entry point. You will have the opportunity of going on a sightseeing flight over Wilpena Pound (optional). Afternoon: Join John Howie for a lovely walk into Wilpena Pound (beautiful southern Flinders Ranges scenery). Evening: After dinner enjoy an informal performance by Paul Trenwith. DAY 3 Saturday May 4, 2019 Marree
Morning: Drive through the southern Flinders Ranges, including Blinman (historic copper mining town) and spectacular Parachilna Gorge. Proceed to the town of Copley where, for lunch, you can sample one of the famous quandong pies at the Copley Bush Bakery. The quandong is a bright red native fruit. Afternoon: Visit the colourful ruins of Farina township (now a ghost town). On arrival in Marree enjoy a short panoramic coach tour. Evening: Dinner in our hotel, followed by a fun-filled Singalong session with John Howie, Gill Delaney & Paul Trenwith. Overnight: Marree Hotel. (B,D)

DAY 4 Sunday May 5, 2019 Coober Pedy
Continue to Coober Pedy along the Oodnadatta Track and William Creek Road. We will be following the route of the original old Ghan Railway from Adelaide to Alice Springs, so there are plenty of historic railway sidings and buildings to see. And there’s Lake Eyre. From the Oodnadatta Track you pass right by Lake Eyre, South Australia’s largest lake! Stop for lunch at the iconic William Creek Hotel. We then continue on to the fascinating outback opal mining town of Coober Pedy. Evening: Dine at your leisure this evening. Most of us will probably dine at John’s Pizza Bar & Restaurant. Overnight: Comfort Inn Coober Pedy & Lookout Cave Underground Motel. (B)

Day 5 Monday May 6, 2019 Coober Pedy
Morning; Sightseeing Coach Tour of Coober Pedy, with local guide. The tour will include a visit to the Old Timers Mine, which includes a museum, machinery demonstration, and an opal showroom. We will also visit a working opal mine, an underground house, one or two underground churches, and one of the world’s most unusual golf courses. After the tour we will have an extended lunch break, where you will be free to explore Coober Pedy at your leisure. Mid-Afternoon; With a local identity we will travel by coach to an area called The Breakaways. The colours and shapes of the hills in this area create some of the most distinctive outback scenery in Australia. Parts of the movies Siam Sunset, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, & Ground Zero were filmed in this area. Evening: Enjoy a fabulous Greek BBQ meal, at the Greek Club. After dinner be entertained by Paul Trenwith (performing for the first time ever, in Coober Pedy). This concert will be open to the public. (B,Wine&Cheese@Breakaways,D)

Day 6 Tuesday May 7, 2019 Uluru/Ayers Rock
Today will be spent travelling along the Stuart Highway to Ulura / Ayers Rock in the southern part of the Northern Territory. We will be staying at the highly-regarded Ayers Rock Resort, situated just 8 kilometres from Ayers Rock, with great views of the Rock and its changing moods. Overnight: Outback Pioneer Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort. (B)

Day 7 Wednesday May 8, 2019 Uluru/Ayers Rock
Morning: Tour of Ayers Rock and surrounding area, with local guide. Visit a couple of aboriginal rock art sites. Visit Walpa Gorge – a desert refuge for plants & animals. Lunchtime: Visit the Uluru – Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre to view interesting displays, watch a short audio-visual presentation, and have some lunch. Afternoon: Visit Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) – impressive dome-shaped rock formations – about 50 kms from Uluru. Late Afternoon: Travel to special viewing spot. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine as you watch the sun go down over Ayers Rock. Evening: Experience Ayers Rock Resort’s Self-Cook BBQ Dinner. Day 8 Thursday May 9, 2019 Kings Canyon
Morning: Travel from Uluru to Kings Canyon, a distance of 302 kms. Afternoon: Visit spectacular Kings Canyon, in Watarrka National Park. Kings Canyon is an enormous amphitheatre with sheer sandstone walls rising to 270 metres. Enjoy walking tour into the floor of the canyon, including the lush Garden of Eden, with John Howie. Evening: Dinner at our accommodation. After dinner John Howie will host a session of Aussie Bush Poetry. Please join in and recite your favourite poems. Overnight: Kings Canyon Resort. (B,D)

Day 9 Friday May 10, 2019 Alice Springs
Today we travel from Kings Canyon to Alice Springs. Along the way, visit the Henbury Meteorite Craters. Lunch at Stuarts Well roadhouse. On arrival in Alice Springs (mid to late afternoon) we will do an orientation tour. See the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station building. Alice Springs nestles in a valley in the beautiful MacDonnell Ranges, on the banks of the often dry Todd River. The vibrant town, which acts as the business centre of a vast area of Central Australia, has modern facilities and has a particularly good selection of cafes and restaurants. You may wish to visit The Kangaroo Sanctuary, in Alice Springs (optional). Chris ‘Brolga’ Barnes’s sanctuary is featured in the world-wide TV documentary series Kangaroo Dundee. Day 10 Saturday May 11, 2019 Alice Springs
Today we explore the spectacular region to the west of Alice Springs, including West MacDonnell National Park. Visit Simpsons Gap (one of the most prominent waterholes in the region), the Flying Doctor’s Memorial (Rev. John Flynn’s memorial), Standley Chasm, & Hermannsburg Historic Precinct (former German Lutheran Mission settlement, where famous aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira was born & raised). Afternoon tea (apple strudel with cream!) at tea rooms, Hermannsburg. Evening: Enjoy a Paul Trenwith concert. This concert will be open to the public. (B,Afternoon Tea)

Day 11 Sunday May 12, 2019 Alice Springs
Morning: Visit Anzac Hill. This war memorial features panoramic views of Alice Springs and the MacDonnell Ranges. We then visit colourful Todd Mall Market (if available). Afternoon: Visit the Alice Springs Reptile Centre (see amazing snakes, frill-neck lizards, goannas, thorny devils, & a saltwater crocodile). Also visit the outstanding Road Transport Hall of Fame, a massive transport museum. Large variety of trucks, cars, utes, trains & buses. Evening: Enjoy Farewell Dinner and exclusive musical performance by legendary Australian songwriter/performer, Ted Egan. (B,D)

Free time. You may like to visit the Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame and/or the Alice Springs Desert Park (both optional). The highly acclaimed Desert Park invites visitors to explore the arid environment and the relationship between its plants, animals and people. Late Afternoon: We board The Ghan and embark on one of the great train journeys of the world. The Ghan will take you from Alice Springs to Darwin. (B,D)

Day 2 Tuesday May 14, 2019 Darwin
The landscape mellows with subtropical flora staking its claim over the passing scenery. We stop in the northern town of Katherine, where you will have free time to explore the town or go on one of the included Off Train Excursions, including Nitmiluk Gorge (Katherine Gorge) Cruise. The rail journey concludes in tropical Darwin, arriving at 5.30pm. We will be transferred to our hotel for a two-night stay. Evening: A free night for you to dine at your leisure and explore Darwin’s nightlife. Overnight: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. (B,L)

Day 3 Wednesday May 15, 2019 Darwin
Morning: Enjoy a sightseeing coach tour of Darwin, a modern, surprisingly cosmopolitan city with a distinctly Asian feel. It has a young, transient population and enjoys an easy going atmosphere. Visit the excellent Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Cyclone Tracy, which devastated Darwin in 1974, is chillingly re-enacted inside the museum’s ‘Black Room’. Also visit the outstanding Darwin Aviation Museum, which features a huge B52 bomber and the wreckage of a Japanese Zero fighter, shot down in the 1942 air raids on Darwin. Afternoon: Free time. Evening: Enjoy dinner and a fabulous evening of folk music, with the Top End Folk Club. (B,D)

Commencement of Tour:

Because the tour commences at 9am on Thursday May 2nd, all tour group members who do not live in Adelaide (or close to Adelaide) will need to be in Adelaide by Wednesday evening May 1st. Cost of pre-tour accommodation & meals not included in the tour price.

Possible coach travel at the start & end of the main tour: If we charter a coach out of Melbourne, for the tour (as we did for the 2017 Central Australia Music Tour), it may be possible for tour group members to travel from Melbourne to Adelaide (at the start of the tour, on Weds. May 1st), and (for those not doing the optional Extension Tour) from Alice Springs to Adelaide and Melbourne at the end of the main tour. Tour group members would be asked to pay a reasonable additional fare for this service. For further information, please discuss with Travelrite.

If any of the musical entertainment in the itinerary is unavailable, we will make every effort to replace that entertainment with similar performers/events.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

International touring can involve a considerable amount of walking and stair climbing in the places visited and it is important that all tour participants have a level of physical fitness that allows them to take part in this activity without the need of assistance from others.

Tour Costs

The tours costs are based on transport, accommodation costs and entrance costs at 1 September 2017. Travelrite reserves the right to alter the costs if any of these factors change, giving any passenger that has booked the right to withdraw with full refund of monies paid or modify arrangements. No alterations to costings will be made within 60 days of departure.

Deposit and Payment

A deposit of $500 per passenger is required at the time of booking. Full payment will be required 60 days before departure. A 1.5% administration charge will be added to payment by Visa and Mastercard. 3% administration charge will be added for payment by AMEX and Diners Club cards.

Cancellation Charges

Cancellations within 60 days prior to departure will result in the loss of all monies paid. Cancellation outside 60 days from departure will result in a cancellation fee of $500 per person. Travel insurance is recommended to cover the costs of cancellation fees due to illness, death in family, etc.

Refunds

The tour is based on arrangements which do not allow for any refunds in respect to sightseeing, accommodation, meals or other services not utilised after the tour has commenced.

Minimum Tour Numbers

The tour has been costed on the basis of a minimum number of passengers having booked 60 days prior to departure. Travelrite reserves the right to cancel the tour, giving a full refund of all monies paid or offer arrangements to proceed with the tour at a modified cost if the minimum number is not achieved.

AAll passengers qualify for 1 piece free baggage allowance.

TOUR PARTICIPATION:
Children under 5 years of age are ineligible on coach & cruise tours. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Passengers with disabilities are welcome on Travelrite & Cruise Offers tours provided they are accompanied by a companion capable of providing all necessary assistance, and do not require special assistance from Travelrite & Cruise Offers personnel. Travelrite and Cruise Offers reserves the right to refuse to carry anyone if it is felt the individual cannot cope with the requirements of coach & cruise tour travel and who may require services and facilities that Travelrite & Cruise Offers cannot guarantee will be available. You agree to not hold the Travelrite & Cruise Offers responsible for any decision made by any of them or any service provider to refuse to carry you, provide any facilities or accommodation to you or to provide any service to you.

Travelrite International Pty Ltd. is the tour organiser. Travelrite International acts only as agents in making of arrangements with carriers, hoteliers and others for the tour. As a result we cannot accept liability for any act or omission whatsoever, whether negligent or otherwise of those carriers, hoteliers or other persons providing services in connection with the tour over whom we have no direct or exclusive control. We do not accept responsibility for any injury, damage, loss, delay, change of schedule or any other events which are beyond our direct control, such as, but not limited to, war, flood, fire, civil disturbance, acts of God, acts of government, or any other authorities, terrorism, accidents to or failure of machinery or equipment, or industrial action. The passage contract in use by the carriers concerned, when issued, shall constitute the sole contract between the transportation companies or firms and the purchasers of these tours and the passengers. Baggage is at own risk throughout the tour. The contract shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Victoria and any legal action must be undertaken in the State of Victoria.
