Day 1 Thursday 19 September, 2019 Departure
Our holiday begins with our flight to Barcelona, Spain.

Day 2 Friday 20 September, 2019 Barcelona, Spain
This morning we arrive in gorgeous Barcelona, and enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city. Capital of Catalonia, Barcelona is the second-largest city in Spain. We will see the historic cathedral and the beautiful streets of the Gothic Quarter. We visit the modernist Eixample district and see examples of Gaudi’s stunning architecture, including the famous Sagrada Familia. This afternoon we will visit Park Guell, designed by Gaudi which is a combination of architectural and landscape features with mature and natural looking plantings. Among them is the grand iron-balustrade entrance, with its mosaic tile work on the walls and the imposing staircase dragon.

Day 3 Saturday 21 September, 2019 Embarkation
This morning will be time at leisure. This afternoon we board the Emerald Princess to start our cruise through the Western Mediterranean.

Day 4 Sunday 22 September, 2019 Toulon/Provence, France
After docking in Toulon we travel to Chateau Val Joanis for a wine tasting and garden visit. This 19th century-style garden was created by Mrs Cecile Chancel from 1978, together with landscape architect Tobbie Loup de Viane. Terraces designed to resemble a French potager garden of the 18th century, combine both ornamental and productive plants. The first terrace mixes vegetables and flowers, the second features roses and the third has ornamental shrubs and fruit trees. A long pergola, submerged in roses and trumpet creeper, runs the full length, while hectares of olives and grapes create the perfect Provencal setting. We will enjoy a drinks party early evening to formally meet group members.

Day 5 Monday 23 September 2019 Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy
This morning we will enjoy a walking tour to see Florence’s highlights with a local guide. We will see the Piazza del Duomo, one of the largest cathedrals in the Christian world. Together with Brunelleschi’s wonderful dome, we see the Campanile and the Baptistry. We also wander through the Piazza della Signoria, which contains the Loggia della Signoria, the Palazzo Vecchio and nearby, the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River. This afternoon we will explore Villa Gamberaia, near Florence. Set in classic olive grove country and restored to its 16th-century splendour, the garden is small but idyllic. The main terrace is laid out with parterres de broderie and the water gardens are reminiscent of Persian reflecting pools.

Day 6 Tuesday 24 September 2019 At sea
The day is free to enjoy the wonderful facilities of the ship. In the afternoon Phil will lead a Gardening Trivia competition. We will divide the group into teams with prizes for the winning team.

Day 7 Wednesday 25 September 2019 Valletta, Malta
The capital of Malta, Valletta, was founded by the Knights of St John in 1566. Its purpose was to strengthen the Order’s position on the island following the siege of Malta by the Turks in 1565. On our sightseeing tour we visit St Johns Co-Cathedral and the magnificent Palace of the Grand Masters. We also visit Mdina, Malta’s ancient capital known as the Silent City and a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island. The afternoon is free to visit Valletta’s wonderful museums or palaces.

Day 8 Thursday 26 September, 2019 At sea
Today Phil will hold an engaging discussion about his gardening life, his influences and his trouble-free, time-saving techniques.

Day 9 Friday 27 September, 2019 Kotor, Montenegro
Today we sail up the picturesque Bay of Kotor, a submerged river canyon. The port of Kotor was built by the Republic of Venice and is surrounded by impressive city walls. There are many attractive Venetian buildings in the town. We will have a morning tour to explore this interesting city. The afternoon will be free for individual exploration.

Day 10 Saturday 28 September, 2019 Corfu, Greece
This morning we arrive in Corfu, the most northern island of the Ionian group, lying at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea. On our tour today, we will visit Corfu Town with its unique architecture influenced by Venetian, French and British occupation. The most notable examples are the Old and New Fortresses (Venetian) as well as the Palace of Saint Michael & Saint George (British) which now houses an impressive Museum of Asiatic Art. We travel out of the town to visit Achilleion Palace, built by Empress of Austria, Elizabeth of Bavaria. The palace was designed with the mythical hero Achilles as its central theme. The gardens on the top of the hill provide a majestic view of the surrounding hills with the Ionian Sea in the background.

Day 11 Sunday 29 September, 2019 At sea
The day is free to enjoy the wonderful facilities of the ship. In the afternoon Phil will lead a Gardening Trivia competition. We will divide the group into teams with prizes for the winning team.

Day 12 Monday 30 September, 2019 Sicily (Messina), Italy
On disembarking we travel to Taormina. We will visit the medieval centre and see the terrace Piazza IX April, with its views overlooking Mt Etna and the sea. We will visit Torre dell’Orologio, a restored 12th-century clock tower and the famous ancient Greek theatre founded in the 3rd century BC and rebuilt by the Romans at the end of the 1st century. It is spectacularly sited with views of Mt Etna in the distance. This afternoon we visit Giardino di Villa Trinita. Built in 1609 this farming estate has been in the Bonajuto family for the last eight generations. Villa Trinità has eight little cottages set grace-fully in the thriving plant life of the botanical gardens, little rural homes that were once the homes of farmers.

Day 13 Tuesday 1 October, 2019 Sorrento, Italy
Today we arrive in Naples. We travel to Sorrento and board a ferry for the island of Ischia where we visit the famous garden, La Mortella, the home of Sir and Lady Walton. Here we explore a garden massed with rare trees, palms, shrubs, ferns and bulbs to excite the plantsman and botanist. There are many interesting features including an Islamic-style rill of water leading to a pool. This is part of an extension to the garden by famous designer Russell Page. He also constructed a series of rock pools, their banks a home for bog plants, ferns and bamboo, which contrast with the parched Mediterranean hillside. Lady Walton, who died a few years ago, has a beautiful memorial set in the garden. This garden delights all the senses.

Day 14 Wednesday 2 October, 2019 Bagno Vignoni – Tuscany
This morning we farewell the Emerald Princess and travel north to the region of Siena for our three-night stay in the beautiful village of Bagno Vignoni. A small Orcia River valley village, which has long been a favourite among painters and travellers seeking solitude in a beautiful location. We will stay at a small family-owned, 15th-century hotel built by Bernardo Rossellino as a summerhouse for Pope Pius II, who enjoyed the advantage of the nearby hot mineral springs. Tour members will enjoy delicious Tuscan dinners each night during our stay at Bagno Vignoni. Phil will meet those wishing to dine with the group.

Day 15 Thursday 3 October, 2019 Bagno Vignoni
This morning we visit Villa Cetinale, built in the 15th century by the Chigi family, bankers and money lenders for Popes and English kings. Additions to the original house and garden were carried out by Carlo Fontana, who was a pupil of Bernini. In the gardens are wonderful statues and the Romitorio, a hermitage where monks lived until near the end of the 19th century. To the north of the villa is the Holy Wood. Later we visit the great medieval city of Siena. Best known for the famous Palio horse race held in the magnificent Piazza del Campo, Siena is also home to the oldest bank in the world, a spectacular town hall and majestic cathedral. In the afternoon a local guide will introduce us to the sights of the city, including the Piazza del Campo, with its splendid civic tower and the enormous, partially completed Duomo. There will be free time for tour members to explore Siena independently.

Day 16 Friday 4 October, 2019 Bagno Vignoni
This morning we will visit La Foce established by the author Iris Origo and her husband Marquis Antonio Origo on the site of an Osteria. They contacted Cecil Pinsent in 1927 to help them design their garden. Pinsent planted cypresses and hollies like a frame surrounding the garden. Inside the frame there is an Italian Renaissance garden, a fountain garden, an orangery and an upper flower garden using Gertrude Jekyll’s planting style as inspiration. We will enjoy a free afternoon in Bagno Vignoni.

Day 17 Saturday 5 October, 2019 Stresa, Italian Lakes
Today we transfer to beautiful Stresa on Lake Maggiore, where we stay for three nights.

Day 18 Sunday 6 October, 2019 Como, Italian Lakes
A scenic trip along the west shore of Lake Como brings us to the picturesque village of Tremezzo and Villa Carlotta. This elegant 18th-century villa has its own landing place on Lake Como and beautiful views over the lake. It was given as a wedding present to Carlotta, Duchess of Saxe-Meningen, who, with her husband, created the landscaped gardens and began the botanical collection. Around the house, an 18th-century formal layout has lemon arbours on the terraces, tall camellia hedges and flower beds to suit the architecture. This afternoon, we visit Villa Balbienello, one of the jewels of the lake, located on a small promontory and accessed by boat. Steep steps lead from the landing to an avenue of candelabra-pruned plane trees and the loggia, garlanded with creeping fig. The villa perches high above Lake Como and is filled with an astounding personal collection of furniture and artefacts.

Day 19 Monday 7 October, 2019 Stresa, Italian Lakes
Today we walk to the foreshore to board our private boat across to Isola Bella, the most spectacular of the Borromean Islands. The magnificent villa is surrounded by one of the most dramatic 17th-century gardens in Italy, with 10 terraces rising like a ship’s prow in the reflecting waters of the lake. Masses of roses and perfumed plants set among superb statues and fountains make this a garden to remember. We visit the nearby island Isola Madre, so very different with its lush sub-tropical planting of ornamental trees and shrubs in a parkland style of the early 19th century. We will enjoy a farewell dinner this evening to say goodbye to new friends.

Day 20 Tuesday 8 October, 2019 Departure
Today we transfer to Milan Airport for our return flight to Australia.

Day 21 Wednesday 9 October, 2019 Arrive Australia
