VIEW ITINERARYDAY 1 Monday 21 March, 2022 Departure
Our holiday begins with a flight to Cape Town via Johannesburg. Located
near the Cape of Good Hope, the southern-most tip of Africa, Cape Town
is a beautiful city surrounded by mountains, vineyards and beaches. The
skyline is dominated by the dramatic 1000 metre-high Table Mountain, with
its sheer cliffs. We are staying near the Victoria and Alfred enclosed secure
shopping area.
DAY 2 Tuesday 22 March, 2022 Cape Town
Upon arrival into Cape Town this morning, we will be met by our private
coach and depart on a sightseeing tour of the city. We will see the Castle
of Good Hope, one of the oldest structures in South Africa, the Victoria and
Alfred waterfront and the Bo-Kaap area, a colourful mixed-race district. We
then take the cable car to the summit of Table Mountain to enjoy spectacular
views. This evening we will enjoy a welcome dinner where you can formally
meet Jane Edmanson and other tour members.
DAY 3 Wednesday 23 March, 20 22 Cape Town
In the morning we visit one of the world's most beautiful gardens, the
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Situated on the eastern slopes of Table
Mountain, these gardens were established in 1913 on land bequeathed
to the nation by colonialist Cecil Rhodes. The gardens are devoted almost
exclusively to preserving indigenous plants and include living collections of
South Africa's many and varied species. This afternoon we visit Stellenberg,
a historic and beautifully proportioned Cape Dutch homestead surrounded
by a graceful garden. Taking inspiration from Hidcote and Sissinghurst in
the UK, it features masses of roses, a white garden, and a series of parterres.
DAY 4 Thursday 24 March, 2022 Cape Town
We journey south to the beautiful peninsula, the Cape of Good Hope. The
nature reserve displays a vast range of the Cape's unique Fynbos flora. There
are 1,300 Fynbos species in this area, including many proteas. The reserve
is also home to baboon, antelope and a variety of bird life. We return to
Cape Town via the pretty and historic seaside village of Simon's Town, now a
naval base and home to a colony of endangered Jackass penguins. We travel
on to visit Vergelegen wine estate, first developed by the Governor of the
Cape in 1700. Lady Phillips retired to Vergelegen in 1917 to restore the very
neglected grounds. Her legacy is the octagonal garden, filled with a heady
perfume. The garden is now owned by Anglo American Farms and has again
been restored, retaining the best from all periods, including the famous
trees, the octagonal garden, the white garden and immaculate lawns. We
will enjoy a wine tasting on our visit to the vineyard.
DAY 5 Friday 25 March, 2022 Cape Town
The morning is free for you to explore Cape Town. In the afternoon we travel
to the wine region of Stellenbosch. It is a place of great beauty, steeped in
South African tradition, which has retained its 18th century charm. Some of
South Africa's finest gardens are found here, including Old Nectar, designed
from 1941 by Una van der Spuy. Set on a wonderful site in the Jonkershoek
Valley with mountains rising high in the background, the steeply sloping
site has been formed into a series of terraces. The formal rose garden has
views over wide lawn terraces, and the pergolas are wreathed in old roses
intertwined with clematis.
DAY 6 Saturday 26 March, 2022 Knynsa
This morning we depart Cape Town and visit the Karoo Desert National
Botanical Garden. This 154 hectare garden is truly unique and cultivates
and displays a broad range of arid and semi-arid plants. We continue to
wilderness, where we will drive to the hilltop lookout called the Map of
Africa, where we will have spectacular views. We continue to Knysna, the
capital of the famous Garden Route. On our journey we will enjoy the
beautiful coastline bordered by extensive lagoons, with indigenous forest
and wildflowers.
DAY 7 Sunday 27 March, 2022 Port Elizabeth
We will enjoy a free morning to explore Knynsa before continuing our
travels along the famous Garden Route, which has a breath-taking range
of vegetation and wild life to Port Elizabeth. Upon arrival we check into
our hotel.
DAY 8 Monday 28 March, 2022 Johannesburg
This morning we fly to Johannesburg. Upon arrival, we will visit the Brenthurst
Garden. Owned by the Oppenheimer family since 1922, this 16 hectare Cape
Dutch style garden was designed by Herbert Baker. There is a sculpture
collection, rose garden, indigenous grass garden and a Japanese garden.
DAY 9 Tuesday 29 March, 2022 Victoria Falls
This morning we will fly to Victoria Falls, where we will stay the next two
nights. On arrival at our hotel the rest of the day is free for you to explore.
DAY 10 Wednesday 30 March, 2022 Victoria Falls
This morning we enjoy a sightseeing tour of this magnificent sight. Victoria
Falls is among the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. The Zambezi
River, which is more than 2km wide at this point, plunges noisily down a
series of basalt gorges and raises an iridescent mist that can be seen more
than 20km away. A great day to experience one of the major natural wonders
of the world. We return to the hotel and the afternoon is free. You may like
to take a helicopter ride over the falls, or take a walk with lions. In the late
afternoon we'll enjoy a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. As the sun sets
behind the African skyline, you'll have the opportunity to see a variety of
game including crocodiles, elephants, birds and hippos.
DAY 11 Thursday 31 March, 2022 Chobe National Park
Today we travel across the border to Botswana to its greatest park, Chobe
National Park. The park extends over 11,700 sq kms, encompassing
floodplains, swamps, woodland and the Chobe River. The park boasts over
450 species of birds plus Giraffe, Lions, Cape Buffalo, Hippos, Crocodile,
Leopard, Impala, Elephants and Zebra, all of which are frequently viewed
on Safari. After being settled into our hotel, we will enjoy a 4 x 4 safari and
