We dock in Belfast this morning. Belfast is one of the great industrial and commercial cities of the Victorian era. We will enjoy a sightseeing tour with a local guide. We see Donegall Square, the hub of Belfast. Bordering the Square are Yorkshire House and the Linden Hall Library, two grand buildings. We see City Hall, the Grand Opera House and St Anne’s Cathedral and learn about the Troubles that blighted the city’s growth for 30 years. This afternoon we travel to visit Mount Stewart House and Garden. The magnificent formal gardens, extensive parklands and the palatial mansion were home to one of the most eminent and influential families in the Unionist cause. Sir Edward Lutyens and his garden designer Gertrude Jekyll were employed to design a garden that linked the garden to the house. The Italian garden grows a superb array of herbaceous borders. There is a Spanish Garden and a Sunk Garden which displays yellow, blue and orange flowering plants, Gertrude Jekyll’s favourite colours.

Day 5 Wednesday 5 June 2019 At sea
A day at sea to enjoy the facilities of the ship. Late morning come and test your knowledge with a fun game of Garden Trivial, with the group divided into teams, Jane will read out the questions and there will be prizes awarded to the winners.

Day 6 Thursday 6 June 2019 Reykjavik, Iceland
This morning we arrive at Reykjavik, the capital and largest city of Iceland, and the gateway to Iceland’s stunning natural wonders, which range from ice fields to boiling thermal pools. After docking we enjoy a sightseeing tour of Reykjavik with an overview tour of the city, including the presidential residence at Bessastaðir, Hofdi House and the Perlan building. We will board our coach for a tour of the Golden Circle visiting the world-famous high-temperature Geysir geothermal area with spouting springs of various formations. We will visit Frioheimar vegetable farm whose products are all grown in green houses. They mainly grow tomatoes and supply 18% of Iceland’s market. We will enjoy a delicious lunch, which features tomatoes and other products grown at Frioheimar’s. We see the spectacular Geyser shoot hot water in the air. This is where the name Geyser originated. We continue with a visit to gorgeous Gullfoss Waterfall (Golden Falls), where you can watch enormous quantities of water tumble violently into a deep, meandering gorge. We also see the site of Iceland´s ancient parliament and where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at the rate of a few centimetres per year.

Day 8 Saturday 8 June 2019 Akureyri, Iceland
This morning we arrive in Akureyri, the unofficial capital of northern Iceland. On our tour today we will visit one of Iceland’s most famous turf houses at Laufás. This 19th-century turf farmhouse was built in the traditional Icelandic style of stone and turf, and it is now one of the last turf farms in the country. It is an interesting regional museum and has the original implements and equipment so essential to life in past centuries, and a beautiful country church (1865). Returning to Akureyri, we will notice the many contrasts in the town’s interesting and varied architecture. We continue our journey to visit Lakemount, a mecca for gardeners for many years. Large structural shrubs and trees, many of them pruned to allow the widest number of views and vistas are important in the design. The garden is divided into a formal pond garden, mixed shrub and perennial borders.
