Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Cruise 14 to 30 September 2010

Day 1 Tuesday September 14, 2010 Departure
Today we depart Australia on our Thai Airlines flight to Rome.

Day 2 Wednesday September 15, 2010 Rome
This morning we arrive at Rome airport and are met by our private coach and transferred to our hotel. We have a sightseeing tour of this great city and see the famous Coliseum, the Pantheon, founded by Agrippa in 27 BC as a temple and converted to a church in the seventh century, the Piazza Navona, a pleasant and lively pedestrian area on the site of Domitian’s Stadium and the Spanish Steps. We visit the Trevi Fountain, where you will be able to throw a coin and make a wish to return to Rome again someday.

Day 3 Thursday September 16, 2010 Rome
Today we have free time for independent activity – perhaps shop along the Corso or visit one of the many museums.

Day 4 Friday September 17, 2010 Civitavecchia
We travel to Civitavecchia to board the Navigator of the Seas for our fabulous 12-night cruise. The ship slips her moorings at 5:00pm.

Day 5 Saturday September 18, 2010 Pompeii
The ship arrives in Naples early morning. We travel to the perfectly preserved city of Pompeii, a wealthy settlement of the Roman Empire – destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 AD. We will have a tour of the ruins with a local guide and see the Forum, the House of the Vetti, a well preserved aristocratic villa and much more. This evening we will have a welcome cocktail party to formally meet the group on the Navigator of the Seas.

Day 6 Sunday September 19, 2010 At sea
A day to enjoy the wonderful facilities of the ship. After lunch we will enjoy a fun game of Travelrite International Trivial Pursuit. There will be prizes for the winning team.

Day 7 Monday September 20, 2010 Athens
Today we dock at Piraeus, the port for Athens. Our sightseeing tour delves into the glorious history of Athens, highlighted by a visit to the Acropolis, still dominating the frantic bustle of modern Athens and admire the Parthenon, built to honour the goddess Athena.

Day 8 Tuesday September 21, 2010 Rhodes
The ship docks at the island of Rhodes today. It is an easy walk to the Old City, once the fortified headquarters of the Crusaders. You may wish to visit the Grand Masters residence or explore the interesting shops.

Day 9 Wednesday September 22, 2010 Kusadasi
We travel to the Roman city of Ephesus, one of the most extensive archaeological sites in the world. We walk along the marble streets, complete with chariot wheel ruts made nearly two thousand years ago. We see the imposing two-story façade of the Library of Celus, the best-preserved structure of its kind in the world. A free afternoon to explore Kusadasi according to your interest.

Day 10 Thursday September 23, 2010 At sea
Today we are at sea. The group will have time to enjoy the fantastic facilities on board. This afternoon, we will have a fun game of Travelrite International Bingo with prizes for the winners.

Day 11 Friday September 24, 2010 Cairo
We arrive in Alexandria early morning and travel to Cairo for a guided sightseeing tour. The Egyptian Museum, one of the best museums in the world, contains over 5000 years of Egyptian history. We see the spectacular golden mask and tomb artefacts recovered from Pharaoh Tutankhamen’s tomb by Howard Carter in 1922. We then travel to Giza and visit the famed pyramids. Built by the Pharaohs around 2500 BC, they are the only one of the original ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ still standing. We have a guided tour of this ancient necropolis and the enigmatic Great Sphinx before returning to the ship.

Day 12 Saturday September 25, 2010 Alexandria
This morning we have a sightseeing tour of the city of Alexandria, Egypt’s second largest city. Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 332BC. The city grew to rival Rome before falling into decline in the fourth century AD. We will see the old town and the new library. The afternoon will be free to explore at leisure. Perhaps enjoy a drink at the Moorish style Hotel Cecil. During WWII the hotel was used by the British Secret Service and Winston Churchill stayed there. Visit Midan Saad Zaghloul, the square at the heart of modern Alexandria.

Day 13 Sunday September 26, 2010 At sea
We have a day to enjoy the facilities of the ship. Perhaps spend time in the English pub or shop in the Burlington Arcade or you might like to try skating on the regulation size skating rink.

Day 14 Monday September 27, 2010 Taormina
Today we call in to the island of Sicily. We travel to the famous resort of Taormina, spectacularly located on a 200 metre rocky outcrop, surveying Mt Etna. The town, founded by the Greeks, has an ancient theatre that also overlooks the mountain. Since the eighteenth century, Taormina has been a popular travel destination. We will walk around the medieval centre and see the Terrace Piazza IX April, with its views overlooking Mt Etna and the sea. We will visit Torre dell’Orologio, a restored 12-century clock tower and the famous ancient Greek theatre, founded in the third century BC and rebuilt by the Romans at the end of the first century – it is spectacularly sited with views of Mt Etna in the distance.

Day 15 Tuesday September 28, 2010 At sea
A day to enjoy the wonderful facilities of the ship. After lunch we will enjoy a fun game of Travelrite International Trivial Pursuit.

Day 16 Wednesday September 29, 2010 Rome
This morning we arrive into Civitavecchia, the port for Rome. After breakfast we disembark and travel to Rome airport late morning for our flight to Sydney.

Day 17 Thursday September 30, 2010 Australia
Tour members arrive in Australia in the evening. The fly/cruise package concludes. You are able to stay on in Europe at no additional airfare.
